What Is This About?
Stories about religion are too often framed around conflict and controversy, culture wars and holy wars. We want to tell another story – the lived experience of people’s faith.
We are a team of journalists from the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley exploring "God, Sex and Family." That's where choices about marriage, dating, the building of community, family and faith play out in private life.

One thing I can say about the Data Road Trip is that it’s taking me places I wouldn’t have thought to go on my own. Like Northern Idaho, which I had heard was lovely, but previously had no reason to trek out to.
The story here? Well, according to the numbers we found, Idaho has the lowest abortion rate in the country. Folks [see entire entry...]

We’re gearing up for our Faces of Faith in SL and slowly the pieces are falling into place. Today we had our first RL training on SL and things got a bit crazy. Video will be posted up soon enough. We did get to check out our project hanging up somewhere in the sky, where the castles also live. I will post [see entire entry...]

Oakland_(But really this one is Tocambaro, Mexico). I brought back an interesting strain of viral bronchitis and have been out of commission for the last few days. But the videos have not stopped playing out in my mind since the trip ended on Sunday. So to not let them fester in that backwards of my mind and furthermore, to not let the suspense lead to disappointment, let Tumbaro at night roll. We have already been [see entire entry...]

Moses may not have imagined anything but stone tablets to write the commandments on, but at UC Berkeley the virtual world of Second Life gives us an entirely new way to distribute and share our stories about God, sex and family. More importantly we care about engaging people and creating a dialogue about our stories. The beauty of it is you never even have to leave your pajamas, much less walk or [see entire entry...]

In the next segment of our trek across America, we explored two of the most prominent communities one thinks about when they think “USA”; New York and Washington D.C.

This convent in the middle of the Bronx, NY is surrounded by public housing units. 50 nuns live here. Every month (except in July and August) they hold post-abortion healing retreats for women (and men) from all faiths. The NY area has the highest rate of abortion in the nation, and the Bronx is especially [see entire entry...]

Percutin_We took the backway out of Uruapan’s congested mess of traffic and into national forest, through pine, fir and fruit trees, to get to Guadalajara. It’s gorgeous country, surrounded by volcanoes, waterfalls, hills big enough to look like The Smokies along the Blue Ridge Parkway with endless rows of corn on both our sides. It was a Mexico I was not familiar with [see entire entry...]
