Faces of Faith not just in RL, but in Second Life
July 12th, 2007Moses may not have imagined anything but stone tablets to write the commandments on, but at UC Berkeley the virtual world of Second Life gives us an entirely new way to distribute and share our stories about God, sex and family. More importantly we care about engaging people and creating a dialogue about our stories. The beauty of it is you never even have to leave your pajamas, much less walk or drive a car when you can fly or teleport quite easily. So come on out to our Faces of Faith conversation and showcase being held July 23-29 in Nowhereville Island. Here’s the culminating event on Sunday, July 29:

I’m KaraAndrade Writer, and it’s more important to me that you can me than to have some fancy name you can’t even remember like your usual Second Life avatar names. You may know me as Kara Andrade or newmaya from other online circles. The entire week we’ll have reporters who wrote the stories coming in of tents available for questions or comments. For those of you who can’t make it the whole week, tune in to the panel discussion which will not only be live webcasted but can be seen on our blog.
The Conversation will feature an interactive format designed to inspire discussion. Not to mention FREE virtual goodies!
But what is Second Life?
First thing is first, if you want to attend the virtual conference you will need to download and install Second Life. Got a clunker for a computer? Make sure to check Second Life system requirements at https://secure-web7.secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php . A basic account at Second Life is free!
So get comfortable in this virtual world, and I’ll be happy to be your master of ceremonies at this church revival style showcase. I will be holding Second Life training and office hours to get you ready for the conference.
KaraAndrade Writer office hours:(PST)
Monday - Friday 12 - 6 pm; Sat/Sundays 5-8 pm
Next, you add me on as a friend: KaraAndrade Writer. You can email me at kara.andrade [at] yahoo.com or you can instant message me while IN Second Life by using “search” on the bottom of your tool bar and searching for “KaraAndrade Writer.” Click on “KaraAndrade Writer” to pull up my profile and send me an “instant message” telling me who you are and that you are interested. I then give you a sneak preview of stories to be featured in our tents.
You can also take advantage of Second Life tutorials to get you started. These “resident” made video tutorials can be found at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Video_Tutorials .
“Faces of Faith in Second Life” will be a “PG” event. This means those of you wishing to explore some of the more adult oriented spaces will have to do that on your own, and it will be expected that you adhere to these policies while attending our tents in Second Life.
I will be posting here with tips, tricks, and ideas to get you ready for the virtual conference.

Sounds like a great event! IM me (Rik Riel) if I can help in anyway.

Sounds like a great event! I hope you’ll do some publicity in SL. I’m involved with both the Quakers and the Unitarian Universalists, but hadn’t heard anything about either the weeklong event or the panel until Rik Riel blogged about it today. I’m sure other in-world religious groups would be eager to help you get the word out.
Will you be publicizing the panelists before the event? Are any of them SL leaders, or will they all be imported from outside?
