Our friend, Brittany Mason is helping us with the WeFaith Conference
June 22nd, 2007Second Life has not yet reached the fate of the Roman Empire as so many SL veterans had predicted it months ago. I think it’s because early adopters of Second Life were just that, early adopters, just as we had the first wave of MySpacers who were then quickly jaded by its appeal to the masses. Now everyone, including my 10-year-old cousin, has a MySpace account.
But the second life of Second Life is already pulsating and major news outlets like the Washington Post and the New York Times are quickly pointing out that SL isn’t just a game, it’s actually a place to practice your faith (in fact it may be the only place to practice your faith for some), a place for educational institutions and nonprofits to garner money for their projects, a campaign platform, and an entire realm of possibility that is hard to scoff at. “What you’re playing a video game?” Is becoming quickly a question as “annoying as are we there yet?”
Among religious communities the use seems to be skyrocketing with more articles coming out everyday on the Anglican Church in SL (also recently written about), meditating Buddhists, the Hare Krishnas (why oh why does no one write an entire article on their incredible inworld fashion sensibility with cool Got Om? Tshirts, saffron robes touch and wear and gallery of art?) and confessing Catholics.
So how do we bring some of these faith leaders in SL for a dialogue on god, sex and family? As many of us learn in journalism 101, the community doesn’t come to us, we go to it. So with my modest avatar that goes by KaraAndrade Writer I venture into that SL terrain with less then a month left before our WeFaith dialogue begins on July 23-27 . And who best but to take us by the hand but Brittany Mason, blonde bombshell by SL and who by RL? Real life, that is, in case you’re wondering.
