Notes from Utah
June 4th, 2007
When I started my journey from San Francisco to Salt Lake City at 5:30 this morning, I thought I was setting out to travel to Utah to scout for a story about religious choices. Turns out that may not actually be the story I’m chasing after all. After some very enlightening conversations this afternoon and evening, it seems to me that what looks like a choice to one person may not look like much of a choice to another. Often it takes an experienced eye to see that there is more than one option available. For many people, all over the world, there is no choice when it comes to religion. And this is the case within many different religions, not just the ones that exist here in Utah. I would imagine that it might be hard to recognize religious freedom if it’s something you’ve never really seen before. If you can’t recognize it, then how could you ever choose it?
I would love to include some photos with my post, but unfortunately, my camera is giving me a strange error message. I’m going to try to take some shots with my cell phone tomorrow and then blue-tooth them onto my laptop for upload… possible? If it is, I’ll do it. In the meantime, here’s a photo of the majestic and beautiful Mormon temple that is literally about one block from where I’m staying right now. Maybe I’ll take the tour of the visitors center tomorrow.

Any sightings of the Angel Moroni?
When it comes to people born into totalist religious movements, the question of choice and religious freedom is a very complicated one….
