Najlae Benmbarek

Najlae Benmbarek is a journalist from Morocco. A recent graduate of the UC Berkeley Journalism School, she came to the US on a Fulbright scholarship. She’s fluent in French and Arabic and recently co-produced TV magazine pieces in France and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

World’s website, and elsewhere. He recently earned his Master’s degree
from the Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley and is working as
a Carnegie-Knight Fellow with News21.

Katya Kumkova-Wolpert just finished her first year at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. She speculates shamelessly on the fact that she speaks Russian to weezle her way into participating in programs that are really meant for recent j-school graduates. Shin_eun_jo2Eunjo recalls visiting Yongsan Garrison as an elementary school student. She learned to speak English at the base under the instruction of an American soldier’s wife. Now 24, Eunjo is majoring in German and in mass media and communication at Sogang University.

A Reason To Join

Shooting the sunset tonight, I had three people walk over to me and say "this is why I joined."  A small part of me is starting to get it.   There’s an incredible calm on the flight deck.  It’s this enormous platform on the back side of the ship with a big x in the middle.  And once you’re out there all you see is this multilayered horizon– grey flight deck, blue ocean and sky.  [see entire entry...]

Luxuries

Of all the material luxuries, I think what I miss the most is a long shower.
I was lucky on my first evening aboard the USS Tortuga: I had plenty of hot water. Not so on the second night, when I resorted to splashing frigid water on my face. But after filming for a few hours in the ship’s engine room, which feels akin to a Bikram Yoga studio, I crave a comfortable shower.
